When Pendleton's Technical Theatre students contacted us about adding additional lighting for their production of West Side Story we immediately began to meet and design a Lighting Rig that would be useful for the whole duration of the show, which were effective for the quite and heartfelt moments all the way to the full cast dance breaks during upbeat songs. We then arrived to install our fixtures and assist with programming. During the show period we had an on call technician if their was an issue to arise, and once the production was over we then de-rigged the fixtures and prepared them their next task. Overall the lighting team for West Side Story said "these additional fixtures were crucial to provide extra coverage and colour control all around the stage, and that it made the whole show look cinematic from all audience viewpoints" Sam Anderson (LX Prog/Op)
For this production Pendleton wanted to add additional lighting fixtures to their rig so that the whole performance space was filled because of the design choice to remove the theatres Legs/Wings/Drapes resulting in the Stage Left to Right walls being fully exposed. They decided to add four Equinox Fusion 140s around the downstage and midstage left and right on booms to provide lots of side light colour no matter where the characters were performing, this essentially created a 360° wash onto the cast member. Two of our AFX Club Mix3's were placed on the furthest upstage bar to provide lots of backlight colours during the whole show and even a few effects throughout. Then as a direct down light flood we outsourced six ADJ Hex 32s which were essential to show the natural light which would have been entering the set from the sun and were effective for their colour wash during many key scenes or songs. To monitor the production for the Deputy Stage Manager (Show Caller) we provided three 5MP Cameras and DVR which also broadcasted to each technical position and backstage. And to round off our involvement to this production we also brought lot's of Powercon to use for our fixtures, their fixtures and their active speakers.
