Download is the UKs biggest rock festival with around 100,000 attendees annually! Produced by Live Nation and held at Donnington Park every June, Download is one of the biggest summer festivals held within the UK. For the 2025 festival I was interviewed and brought onto site by PRG to work on Download's Main Stage as a lighting technician. Working directly on the project for around two weeks and seeing the lighting package from prep to load out. Having the opportunity to work under PRG's most experienced Project Managers and Lighting Tech's has given myself more confidence and support to further my career!
Lighting Prep at PRG Longbridge - Prior to working on site, a small team of lighting techs for the download project worked within PRGs warehouse to prepare cable looms, power and data distribution racks, and check over the lighting fixtures before heading out onto site. This gave me the opportunity to quickly learn our rig plans, cable runs and fixture quantities before heading onto site. We pre labelled the spacing onto the trusses for our fixtures and had every loom end identified for it's specific power or data purpose, with spare lines attached too! Then the evening before we were moving to site, we loaded our trucks and joined the rest of our on site crew on our tour bus.
Lighting Build On Site - Once on site I primarily worked on the main overhead rig and the IMAG framing trusses, being hands on with everything from rigging fixtures, connecting feeder looms to truss extension looms and slinging, shackling and levelling motors. After the main overhead rig was installed and at trim we began to work on the IMAG frames to build and cable the blinder towers (where every blinder was on an individual dimmer channel throughout the whole rig) and complete power and data for the GLP JDC 1s. The LX team also supported other teams who worked on installing lights and video walls to the Delay Towers within the crowd areas.
Show Days - Throughout the show days I was placed onto the day shift which oversaw the powering up and rig checks during the morning, working with visiting bands floor packages to incorporate them into our system (power and data) and supervising the overall system (power draw, data uplinks/downlinks, atmospherics fluid levels/safety). Working with the visiting LDs was great to see how we set up different lighting brands consoles to our networks, seeing how they operate for their shows and their set ups (LTC Timecode, Busking, Cue Stack, etc) and their tasks from arriving on site to loading out. Overall the day shift was great to understand further the behind the scenes tasks from changing over from band to band.
