A reoccurring venue I have completed many themed party nights in, I was really pleased to come back to Rivington Barn for a Summer Tropical Themed event. Already previously knowing the venues layout, power and in house lighting system meant that I could easily pull all of the production needs together. Working with the Events Organiser and LX Programmer/Op was great to understand their concepts and goals for making a lighting rig fit for purpose.
Without any information about the room design or theme I had to make a rig which could provide a party atmosphere over the dance floor in the centre while still providing lights over the seated areas at the sides. I made a rig filled with Moving Head Spots and Washes, and adding Strobes, Face Light and a Stage Lighting Package. I also implemented the venue lighting which were Moving Head Spots and Washes, that had been installed by the same production company.
I worked with a small crew to build and lift the truss onto the beams of the barn and I also worked on building the stage and vertical truss pillars. Then I was left to rig all the lighting fixtures and wire up the power and data cables. I used two 16 amp sockets (one for each run of lights) and a 32 amp output to a distro for the video wall. I also sent a DMX Universe per a run of lights too (Daisy Chained Power/Data), and then sent a universe to the lights on the stage and a Universe to a DMX Node for the venues lights.
Because I wasn't able to be the LX Operator we freelanced Kiren Wright to be the LX Op as we have worked with him many times on past events and his experience of working on large scale festivals and events would make him the ideal choice. Because I'm not familiar with how Kiren lays out his consoles I didn't want to record anything into the desk apart from key submasters such as strobes, group intensity's and a PreSet so I could take photos on behalf of my works social media employee. I began by patching the in house lights which I loaded up from a previous show file I had from the venue, then I patched each run of the truss and the stage package lights. I then laid out an overhead view of the lights on the consoles fixture page so Kiren could easily select fixtures he wanted significantly reducing his programming time.
