Whilst working as a visionary I take into consideration the performance as a whole from the audiences viewpoint. Weather this is choreographing the camera shots and movement to viewing a stage from the pit of an arena to tiers within a theatre, I have the vision for how the Lighting, Set, Video and Pyro should all look as a full view. I use my photographic way of thinking to make a blank canvas into what the whole stage should look like within the whole venue.
Working within theatre I take my time into understanding the story, specific practical's and the moods I want to set on stage. Mood boards are a great way for others to interpret the vision I have in mind and transfer to a real image, but the majority of my work is completed with a pen and paper and making multiple ideas, then narrowing down to one. I then perform site visits to the venue to see specific features and from then on I can begin my Rig and Setting Designs. Depending on the production I tend to enjoy having shadowy moments within the show where just side lights may be used with a key colour such as Red, Deep Blue or Dim Amber. But I also have complete opposite periods within shows during big dance breaks where everything's bright, full and fun.
Creating Lighting within Stage and TV is something that I really enjoy, imagining looks and movement that accurately match the music and performance is something many say I'm very good at. Especially now that lot's of lighting fixtures can pixel map meaning that I can dive even more specifically to just pick out individual diodes and more intricate effects. Most programmers who work with me on these scale of projects like to hear my interpretation of the effects and how the pixels should swoosh or "BAM" throughout songs. I find that using my Musical Theatre and Music Qualification knowledge gives me a great understanding of how to keep the grandeur of the lighting to match the performance and how the lighting effects should follow the Time Signature, or fade during the vibrato of the final note. Key inspirations for my visionary designs would be shows such as Strictly Come Dancing and Britain's Got Tallet Finals as theses shows are what I aspire to complete projects on the same level as in the future.
My final area to work within is Live Events, covering Festivals, Concerts and Touring, creating an effective and practical lighting structure that's adequate for the space and production level but still is intriguing and unique to the event. I find that by starting with a common shape or theme and how immersive the lighting structure should feel gives me a good starting point to a live events rig, weather that's just a simple floor package, all the way to a curvature stage where the lighting rig continues over the crowd helps me to make an effective rig plan. From their I begin the think about the fixture specifics and how I may implement video walls into the space, generally using the inner of the common shape I have. After that I start to make colour pallets and either a timecoded show for tours or busk files and MRV files for other lighting operators.
